Medicago truncatula AS A MODEL FOR STUDYING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ROOT PARASITIC PLANTS AND LEGUMES

چکیده
Parasitic angiosperms are a pest for many crops in the World. Broomrapes (Orobanche spp.) belong to this group of parasites and attach to the roots of the hosts in order to take water and nutrients from them. This causes a pernicious effect on the crops which can lead to a complete yield loss in some cases. No complete control measures are available to date, but breeding for resistance remains as one of the most feasible and environmental friendly methods. However, the mechanisms governing the interaction between these parasites and the host are yet not well understood, including those responsible for resistance. For that reason, the development of model plants to study these interactions will allow a better knowledge of those mechanisms. In the present work, the use of Medicago truncatula as a model to study the resistance and pathogenesis of Orobanche spp. will be presented, and different techniques available for those studies (histology, gene expression, proteomic) will be discussed.

NPR1 Protein Regulates Pathogenic and Symbiotic Interactions between Rhizobium and Legumes and Non-Legumes
BACKGROUND Legumes are unique in their ability to establish symbiotic interaction with rhizobacteria from Rhizobium genus, which provide them with available nitrogen. Nodulation factors (NFs) produced by Rhizobium initiate legume root hair deformation and curling that entrap the bacteria, and allow it to grow inside the plant. In contrast, legumes and non-legumes activate defense responses when...

The root hair is a specialized cell type involved in water and nutrient uptake in plants. In legumes the root hair is also the primary site of recognition and infection by symbiotic nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria. We have studied the root hairs of Medicago truncatula, which is emerging as an increasingly important model legume for studies of symbiotic nodulation. However, only 27 genes from...
متن کاملInoculation and Growth with Root Parasitic Weeds
A number of parasitic plants have become weeds, posing severe constraints to major crops including grain legumes. Breeding for resistance is acknowledged as the major component of an integrated control strategy. However, resistance against most parasitic weeds is difficult to access, scarce, of complex nature and of low heritability, making breeding for resistance a difficult task. Only moderat...
متن کاملTracing nonlegume orthologs of legume genes required for nodulation and arbuscular mycorrhizal symbioses.
Most land plants can form a root symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi for assimilation of inorganic phosphate from the soil. In contrast, the nitrogen-fixing root nodule symbiosis is almost completely restricted to the legumes. The finding that the two symbioses share common signaling components in legumes suggests that the evolutionarily younger nitrogen-fixing symbiosis has recrui...

Many higher plants establish symbiotic relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi that improve their ability to acquire nutrients from the soil. In addition to establishing AM symbiosis, legumes also enter into a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with bacteria known as rhizobia that results in the formation of root nodules. Several genes involved in the perception and transduction of bacteria...
